I am an engineer by trade and experience and have, and still do, work in the oil and gas industry, which is the biggest polluter and destroyer of our environment both directly and indirectly. But in today’s society, without oil and gas our world as we know it would come to a grinding halt.
Having said that, I do believe that it is possible to reduce our dependency on all the fossil fuels and become a little more sustainable working with nature, not against it.
I am also realistic, the problems of the world, such as climate change, world food and water shortages are not going to be solved by the governments of the world arguing over who does what, when and why. It is down to the individual.
After all if everyone in the UK managed to switch something off that saved only 1 Watt of electricity a day, the total energy saved would be around 60MW each day, that is almost 22GW of energy per year saving over 20 tonnes of CO2 per year from a coal fired power station or 11½ tonnes per year from a natural gas power station.
How much time and energy would the government have to waste to achieve these type of savings and who would have to pay for it?
Individually we can all do something little to improve our lives, together we can make a world of difference.
